Assessing the Robustness of Models of Earth’s Deep Mantle and Core

Session ID#: 79843

Session Description:
Our views of Earth’s deep interior properties and processes have evolved over the past two decades. Investigations have produced complex models of heterogeneous deep interior structure. High PT experiments and simulations have constrained properties such as lower mantle thermal conductivity and partition coefficients. Satellite missions continue to map geomagnetic variations with unprecedented accuracy, while geodynamo simulations capture these variations with ever improving realism. These elements lead to increasingly detailed, yet sometimes conflicting geodynamic scenarios. Here we seek to discuss the confidence bounds of deep Earth models to determine which aspects of these models are robust and which need further investigation. Questions for this session include: how well are D’’ properties constrained? Are there stable layers above and below the outer core? How do CMB properties influence the core? What are the primary drivers of core flow? What bounds exist on the inner core’s age and seismic properties?
