Insights into cloud and precipitation processes: Validating retrieval products and climate models with in-situ observations and remote sensing

Session ID#: 79899

Session Description:
Over the last three decades, an increasing number of multi-platform field experiments (ground-based, shipborne, airborne, etc.) have improved our understanding of cloud and precipitation processes through collocated in-situ observations and remote sensing retrievals. However, collecting cloud and precipitation estimates from observations, mitigating retrieval uncertainties and incorporating these data within climate models remain challenging due to the range of scales at which cloud and precipitation processes occur relative to nominal model resolutions. Studies focused on understanding these processes using in-situ observations, validating remote sensing retrievals of precipitation and linking improvements in model characterization of cloud and precipitation processes to observational measurements are solicited.
