Planetary Magnetism and Core Processes
Session ID#: 80030
Session Description:
Planetary magnetism provides insight into the evolution of planets, moons, early planetesimals, and even processes in the solar nebula and protoplanetary disk. Paleomagnetic and crustal magnetic records on solar system bodies largely reflect remanent magnetization acquired in the presence of core dynamo fields. The study of these records can give us insights about the thermal, dynamical, and compositional properties of planetary cores. At the same time, independent studies of core properties through numerical, experimental or theoretical approaches are critical for understanding the evolution of dynamo fields and the remanent magnetism that these fields contribute to. In this session, we aim to facilitate links between paleomagnetism/crustal magnetism studies and research in core processes. We call for observational, experimental, and theoretical contributions spanning the broad areas of planetary crustal magnetism, paleomagnetism, core composition, core dynamics, thermal evolution, and dynamo theory.
