Physics of Lightning Interaction with Tall Objects

Session ID#: 80084

Session Description:
Tall objects are preferred targets for upward and downward lightning strikes. Understanding how lightning interacts with tall objects is important for characterizing various lightning processes and improving lightning protection schemes. Much progress has been made in studying tall-object lightning, based on high-speed optical and VHF channel imaging, direct measurements of current in towers, and remote measurements of electromagnetic field waveforms. This special session will serve to attract contributions from different parts of the world concerning recent findings in lightning physics based on observations of lightning interaction with tall objects. Papers are solicited on all aspects of lightning studies involving tall objects (including triggered lightning studies, in which lightning is initiated by a rapidly extending thin wire below the cloud base). Results from field and laboratory experiments, theoretical work, and numerical modeling, as well as inferences from lightning locating system data, are welcome.
