Mapping and Monitoring Irrigated Agriculture: New Methods and Synergies
Session ID#: 80460
Session Description:
Cropland irrigation is an intensified agricultural land use at the center of the Food-Energy-Water (FEW) nexus. It may employ water from different sources (surface- and ground water; blue-, green-, and graywater, etc.), enhance crop productivity, and affect water and energy cycles. Recent advances in mapping and monitoring using models and Earth observations (e.g., optical, radar, thermal) are contributing to creating actionable information about irrigation that is comprehensive, consistent, and timely. Understanding and quantifying irrigation practices and patterns are critical to understanding water use, quality, and quantity, and food supply. Topics for this session include sustainability, climate feedback effects, resilience, risk reduction practices, modeling, adaptation, water conservation, energy usage, pollution, salinization, soils, food security, area estimation, productivity, yield, historical trends, and blue, green, or gray water usage in the context of the FEW nexus.
