Geovirology: viruses in Earth’s biomes and their impacts on microbial ecology and biogeochemistry

Session ID#: 80471

Session Description:
Viruses are ubiquitous and abundant in Earth’s natural and managed environments, from the deep oceans to mines to agricultural fields, yet we are only beginning to grasp their diversity and ecological impacts. Viral infection can contribute to host mortality, horizontal gene transfer, and the expression of viral “auxiliary metabolic genes” with predicted roles in carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorous cycling. New tools are constantly being developed for viral sequence recovery from metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data, and, in combination with stable isotope probing, microscopy, and other cutting-edge approaches, we are learning which viruses are active and how they affect and respond to the environment with high spatiotemporal resolution. We aim to discuss research on viruses that infect hosts from all domains of life across scales ranging from molecular interactions to community ecology and global impacts in a variety of environments, including soil, sediments, aqueous systems, air, extreme environments, and experimental systems.
