Hydrology of Arid and Semi-arid Environments

Session ID#: 80490

Session Description:
A significant fraction of the world’s population relies on water from semi-arid basins (e.g., Colorado, the Sahel). Climate change and natural variability in these regions can have huge consequences for the availability of water needed in a variety of uses, including agriculture, health maintenance, and basic subsistence.  Understanding linkages of different components of the hydrologic system is critical for determining and ameliorating impacts on it by land surface changes, climate change, water management, and increased urbanization.

We invite physical, biological, and social scientists as well as engineers to submit abstracts addressing the physical phenomena, the social effects, and engineering solutions affecting the ability to satisfy current and future water needs.  We hope that a summary of current understanding of the hydrological system, and practices involving it, might stimulate the development of water conservation, resilience to climate and weather extremes, and confidence in the future.
