Space-based Precipitation Observations, Estimation and Applications: a Centennial Perspective
Session ID#: 80639
Session Description:
Precipitation is a designated observable by the Earth Science community in the 2017 Decadal Survey. Global measurements of precipitation have been vital for monitoring Earth’s water cycle, weather and climate. Following the first spaceborne observations in the 1970’s, the NASA/JAXA Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM), launched in 1997, set a standard with the first 3D depiction of tropical convection around the globe. Since 2014, the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission has improved on TRMM. Combining the Core Observatory and an international satellite constellation, GPM provides unified global precipitation products for research and applications. Future observing systems will target processes coupling precipitation, aerosols, clouds, and convection (A-CCP Designated Observables). This session invites contributions in all areas of precipitation science, including perspectives from past decades and future prospects, with a focus on GPM and TRMM. These include algorithms, ground validation, sensor calibration, data fusion, and broad applications of satellite precipitation.
