Scientist Citizens:  Shaping Science-Informed Policy

Session ID#: 80982

Session Description:
Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally and the Union of Concerned Scientists will host a panel of earth and geoscience professionals who have made substantive contributions to their communities through federal, state, or local government engagement.

Presenters will share case studies about their civically-focused work, and its impacts on science-based decision making. The types of activities described may include joining a local commission, advising a lawmaker, advocating for change to a law, and serving in elected office. Speakers will represent a diverse range of fields, from hydrology to atmospheric science to geohealth and beyond. We will also discuss what hurdles scientists face to getting more involved. This session will contribute to an ongoing conversation on civic engagement by AGU members, and members of the scientific community more broadly. Attendees will leave with a fuller sense of the range of ways they can bring their expertise to engaging in their own communities.
