A debate on the spectrum of rift systems and the nature of the transition to stable seafloor spreading

Session ID#: 81143

Session Description:
A growing body of observations support that rifting of continental lithosphere occurs by an interplay between magmatic and extensional processes in manners not compatible with the traditional magma-poor vs magma-rich (volcanic vs non-volcanic) models prevalent in the literature of the last 2 decades. Increasing spatial resolution of geophysical observations and improved 2D and 3D numerical capabilities support a new view of the systems and call for a discussion. Furthermore, a renewed effort to re-evaluate the rift system structure preserved in moderately deformed mountain belts has brought a complementary  higher-resolution view of some potential examples of ancient systems, although their actual nature is still under discussion.  We encourage contributions from field and laboratory work, that include geophysical, geological, and numerical and analog experiments characterising and discussing the 3D/4D evolution from rift systems of distributed deformation to rift localisation and their evolution into stable seafloor-spreading  plate boundaries.
