Coupled Processes in Rock and Soil Systems Across Scales

Session ID#: 81438

Session Description:
Even though, coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechano-Chemical phenomena (THMC) in rock and soil have been long recognized, there are still many challenges associated with numerical and experimental studies of such processes, mainly due to the spatial and temporal scales associated with them. For instance, CO2-injection may compromise the integrity of geological reservoirs due to the coupled THMC process derived from CO2-fluid-rock interactions. THMCs also occur in many other engineering and scientific fields, including nuclear waste repositories and alterations in fault zones. This session aims to highlight the importance of the THMCs processes, their scale dependency and the necessity of a unified understanding based on experimental and modelling approaches. Topics within the scope of interests include but are not limited to (i) constitutive laws and multiscale modeling, (ii) in-situ, laboratory, and field studies, and (iii) validation and verification of predictive models at various scales.
