Towards Healthy Resilient Communities: Public Health Impacts of Infrastructure Failures during Natural Hazards
Towards Healthy Resilient Communities: Public Health Impacts of Infrastructure Failures during Natural Hazards
Session ID#: 81512
Session Description:
This session focuses on industrial and environmental infrastructure failures during natural hazards and their impact on public health. Such failures can affect community health because of exposure to contaminated media, change in microbial communities and aquatic biota, and acute and chronic changes in water, air, soil, and sediment quality.
The session aims to provide a platform to exchange knowledge on the interaction between public health and the state of the environment before, during, and after natural disasters.
We encourage contributions from all disciplines particularly collaborations between health and science and engineering communities on topics that focus on: i) improving understanding of the acute and chronic impacts of failures in industrial and environmental infrastructure on public health; ii) assessing community perception of exposure and risk; iii) developing monitoring, response and mitigation strategies, iv) and modeling, experimental, and field studies that are aimed at reducing vulnerabilities and enhancing community resilience.
