Beyond Hydrography: Seafloor Mapping as Critical Data for Understanding Our Oceans

Session ID#: 81525

Session Description:
Global seafloor mapping provides fundamental datasets for ocean science. Aside from better understanding the shape of the seafloor, mapping data are important in modeling, geohazard assessments, and habitat studies. They are crucial to forming baseline characterizations, establishing marine protected areas, and prioritizing exploration and monitoring. The lack of detailed knowledge of the seafloor has limited the development of marine spatial planning, ecosystem-based management, and the designation of reserve areas associated with exploration leases for seabed mining. As the need to accommodate multi-sectoral use of the ocean grows, the demand for high-quality mapping data will increase.

This session showcases varied uses for mapping data by illustrating the benefits of: data-sharing within and across different communities and establishing programs to increase mapping coverage; increasing use of integrated ocean data observations through emerging technologies, innovative solutions incorporating AI, machine learning, and autonomous modalities; and establishing best-practices that maximize data quality, acquisition, and integration.
