Expansion and Intensification of the Tropical Agricultural Footprint: Trends, Causes, and Consequences
Session ID#: 81894
Session Description:
Agricultural systems across the tropics have changed rapidly in the last three decades, expanding in area and increasing in productivity. Industrial cash crops are replacing both natural ecosystems and traditional agricultural production, even as timber plantations and agroforestry expand. Widespread shifts in land use and crop species have impacted food and water provisioning, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity from local to global scales.
Despite their importance, changes in land cover and land use of tropical agro-ecosystems remain challenging to monitor, explain, and predict. Remote sensing of the diverse crop species and farm types found in the tropics and sub-tropics is a rapidly developing field, as is our understanding of the impacts of agricultural intensification on societies and ecosystems. In this session, we seek contributions that characterize changes in agricultural land cover and land use using satellite data and, where possible, place them in the context of anthropogenic drivers and socioecological change.
