Use of Earth Observations in Mitigating Major Environmental Challenges in the Americas
Use of Earth Observations in Mitigating Major Environmental Challenges in the Americas
Session ID#: 82022
Session Description:
While countries in the Americas face challenges linked to increasing populations and vulnerability to natural disasters, the region’s nations have also sought to leverage Earth observations (EO) for the benefit of society on a whole. This is evidenced by the growing number of governments that have invested in EO satellites which are, in turn, contributing to the global body of knowledge related to the monitoring of agricultural production, changing land use and ecosystems, disasters, and water resources. Taking that into context, this session will highlight efforts related to EO research and capacity building activities in the region, focusing on lessons learned in terms of data-driven decision making. The session will also address decision-making by local communities and indigenous groups, in consideration of how local and indigenous populations are particularly vulnerable to environmental changes. Submissions are welcome from researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers working on these issues in the Americas.
