Continuous Measurements of Earth System Mass Change: GRACE, GRACE-FO and Beyond

Session ID#: 82260

Session Description:
GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO), launched May-22 2018, is now providing continuity to the 15-year record of temporal variations in Earth’s gravitational field established by GRACE (2002-2017).  These measurements provide a global view of Earth system mass transport.  A third mission, recommended in the 2017 National Academy of Sciences Earth Science and Applications from Space Decadal Survey, provides a pathway for extending this data record beyond 30 years.

This session solicits contributions concerning: 1) evaluations of quality, calibration, and environmental effects evident in GRACE-FO flight data, 2) data processing strategies, and 3) assessments of background geophysical models for de-aliasing of the new datasets. We solicit presentations on: validation of GRACE-FO mass-flux data products; on complementary data sets for gap-filling and evaluation of continuity from GRACE to GRACE-FO; and on future mission concepts of Earth system mass transport measurements.  We especially solicit contributions that assess the GRACE-FO data quality, including the technology-demonstration laser-ranging-interferometer.
