Observations and models of continental rifts, pull-apart basins, backarc basins, and rifted margins

Session ID#: 82347

Session Description:
Observations and modeling suggest that rifting occurs through complex feedbacks between brittle faulting, ductile flow, surface- and magmatic processes, and forces responsible for lithosphere extension. This session will bring together recently acquired data sets, innovative techniques and new concepts elucidating the structure and dynamics of rifts, pull-apart basins, backarc rifts, and rifted margins. We solicit presentations that examine processes through field, geophysical, geochemical, analog, and numerical investigations. The session aims to cover a wide range of topics related to lithosphere extension, and we welcome submissions that address structural inheritance, fault evolution, fluid flow, the role of the mantle, extension obliquity, multiphase deformation, magmatic processes, natural hazards such as rift earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and surface processes.
