Chasing the Liquid: Experimental and Microanalytical Techniques for Determining Melt Compositions
Session ID#: 82353
Session Description:
This session focuses on studies aiming to determine silicate melt compositions, and their properties, in magmatic systems where melt is no longer present, or is not representative of its crystalline constituents. Understanding the evolution of silicate melts remains a fundamental problem in igneous geochemistry. However, the final erupted magma rarely records the complexity of melt evolution, necessitating alternative methods of determining silicate melt compositions. Bringing together igneous petrologists, geochemists, and experimentalists, this session invites presentations on studies utilizing melt inclusions and trace element partitioning with the goal of interrogating the crystalline record to determine the hidden composition of globally diverse silicate melts.
