Resilience in an era of climate change…what does that even mean?

Session ID#: 82457

Session Description:
Fostering resilience in an era of climate change is a noble goal that is increasingly explicit in ecosystem and habitat management, agriculture and agroecosystems, urban planning, public health, coastal management, industry and business, infrastructure and transportation, and the military missions. However, across these sectors and many more, resilience is often interpreted and used quite differently. Moser et al. (2019) recently conducted a meta-analysis on the term, grouping resilience concepts into three broad categories: process, system trait, or outcome. This session seeks examples of resilience (or lack of resilience) in each of these categories and across many sectors. How was resilience defined and measured? Was it viewed as conferring persistence or transformation? Was it only observed and reported or also enhanced through intervention? The intent of this session is to improve cross-discipline communication and learning by demonstrating the diversity of science and practice as we interact with concepts of resilience.
