Integrating Drones and Autonomous Vehicles into Near-Surface Geophysical Investigations: Airborne, Ground-based and Underwater Platforms for Remote Data Collection

Session ID#: 82999

Session Description:

The use of small unoccupied airborne systems (sUAS), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), and remote-controlled (RC) ground-based vehicles in support of hydrologic, geologic, and geophysical investigations is growing rapidly. The ability of these "drone" technologies, to efficiently acquire high-resolution geo-referenced airborne, underwater and ground-based data is driving innovations in platforms, sensors, and data analytics. Drone technology facilitates data collection in remote, environmentally sensitive and unsafe areas with unprecedented spatial coverage. In this session, we focus on advances in the development and application of sUAS, AUV and RC technology that contribute to improved characterization and understanding of hydrologic, permafrost, and ecological systems and processes. Of specific interest is the development and demonstration of novel geophysical and other types of sensors and innovative data processing and interpretive techniques. We welcome examples of applications to hydrologic, ecological, permafrost, hazards and other problems.
