Making Moving Small Science Instruments and their data FAIR
Making Moving Small Science Instruments and their data FAIR
Session ID#: 83067
Session Description:
Standardization, Open source initiatives, advances in miniaturization, and general lowering costs for sophisticated remote sensing systems have led to a rapid increase in so called small science’s use of systems that what were previously solely the purview of larger and generally more costly scientific infrastructure projects. The increase in use of CubeSats and small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) in advanced scientific investigations are primary examples of this trend. However, infrastructure to comprehensively handle the data collected by this new set of heterogeneous systems managed by smaller teams has not kept pace. This session will cover the latest efforts to improve and standardize data infrastructure for small science in general, and particularly seeks input on the issue as it relates to the unique needs of moving remote sensors such as CubeSats, sUAS, marine vehicles, and autonomous ground rovers in Earth and Environmental scientific investigations.
