Observing and simulating aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions in a 3-D atmosphere

Session ID#: 83522

Session Description:
Clouds and aerosols play a vital role in modulating the radiative energy budget of Earth-Atmosphere system. Most current remote sensing algorithms and weather or climate models consider radiative processes one-dimensional (1-D) and assume cloud and aerosol fields to be separate and plane-parallel. Increasingly, however, studies have indicated that this traditional paradigm is not appropriate, as clouds and aerosols often co-exist and display strong horizontal (3-D) variations. This session invites theoretical, observational, and technological studies aiming to shift remote sensing methods and radiative simulations toward a new, 3-D paradigm. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
·      Identification and reduction of errors caused by 3-D radiative effects and unresolved small-scale variations in remote sensing and in radiation simulations for weather and climate models.
·      Influence of 3-D radiative processes on cloud dynamics and surface energy budgets.
·      Advanced techniques to retrieve 3-D cloud structures.
·      Advances in 3-D radiative transfer theory and models.
