Boundary Layer Clouds and Turbulence, and their Interaction with the Underlying Land or Ocean surface
Session ID#: 83882
Session Description:
Interactive processes between the underlying surface and the atmospheric boundary layer are very important for the surface energy budget, transport of trace gases, aerosol and momentum, cloud lifecycle and initiation of deep convection. Recent advances in models and observations such as Lidar, provide a detailed sampling of turbulence structures that improves our understanding of the coupling and feedback processes. This session will highlight process studies on local and diurnal time scales using both observations and models and address questions including: 1) How do feedbacks between aerosols, boundary layer, and clouds influence the cloud lifecycle? 2) How do vegetation, soil moisture anomalies, and heterogeneity affect boundary layer turbulence and clouds? 3) How do interactions between the ocean surface and the boundary-layer, including wind-wave coupling, impact the initiation of clouds? 4) What are the mechanisms controlling cloud regime transitions, e.g. stratocumulus to cumulus over ocean and shallow to deep convection over land?
