DI005
Deep volatile cycle in Earth and other rocky planets and its influences on mantle and surface processes

Session ID#: 84603

Session Description:
Distribution and exchange of volatile elements (e.g., C, O, H, N, S, and noble gases) between planetary surfaces and interiors greatly influence long-term planetary thermal evolution, geodynamics and habitability. Significant progress has been made to improve our knowledge of volatile budgets and fluxes in Earth (particularly at oceanic and subduction settings), as well as their effects on melting behaviors and rheological/thermodynamic properties of mantle materials. Recent studies have also improved our understandings on volatile evolution in other rocky planets. To advance comparative studies on volatile cycles in Earth and other terrestrial planets, this session seeks contributions that could provide new constraints on volatile distribution within planetary interiors and exchange between surface and interior reservoirs, as well as their impacts on planetary mantle dynamics and long-term surface processes. We encourage contributions from a broad range of fields, including but not limited to, laboratory experiments, geochemical and geophysical observations and theoretical modeling.
