Mixing and reaction in heterogeneous subsurface environments: New experimental, numerical and theoretical approaches
Session ID#: 85521
Session Description:
Subsurface systems are characterized by multiscale physical and chemical heterogeneity, which drive the mixing and reaction of solutes, particles, colloids and micro-organisms. Heterogeneity and intermittent flow dynamics in porous and fractured media lead to a range of non-linear behaviors controlling coupled mixing and biogeochemical reaction processes from the pore to the regional scale. This includes anomalous transport, enhanced or reduced mixing and reaction rates, and the formation of mixing and reaction hotspots. The aim of this session is to discuss new experimental, numerical, and theoretical approaches to quantify and upscale mixing and reaction phenomena, and link them with medium structure and flow heterogeneity. This includes pore, laboratory and field scale approaches for imaging mixing and reaction processes, studies of flow, mixing and reactive transport from pore to Darcy scale including non-Newtonian and density-driven flows, and models and theories for hydrodynamic mixing and reaction dynamics.
