Bridging urban scales using modeling and measurements for improved urban sustainability

Abstract:
Continued inquiry into the dynamics of urban systems over the last century has improved our understanding of urban metabolism. Nonetheless, cities struggle to achieve their sustainability goals. While most of the decisions made on urban management are based on systems scale, high-gradients in urban areas behoove sustainability decisions to be made on more local or microcosm scales. Here we will show examples of how a mix of different observations (e.g., from Array of Things instrument for environmental variables), publicly available datasets (e.g., census, disease, and crime) and numerical modeling techniques can help us achieve improved understanding of urban sustainability issues and related solutions.
