Evolutionary theory suggests that new [genetic] information is the main driver for gradual change over time (evolution). There is low expectation that a constant source of the same type of information will yield change. With this lens, one could argue that evolutionary theory applies to STEM disciplines. As society is facing unprecedented issues in all sectors, science could offer innovative information for solution generation. Science that includes a broad range of perspectives, from a variety of information sources will allow for more thoroughly vetted methodologies that will yield stronger, more holistic solutions. Solution creation requires thinking, learning and discovery which are fundamental elements of scientific endeavors, but those elements do not occur in a vacuum. People manifest those elements. The modern version of the scientific enterprise is heavily based on Western perspectives, approaches and interests, which in many instances have created and perpetuated environments that only allow certain types of elements to thrive. Subsequently, many STEM learning and research environments have only allowed certain types of people to thrive. Many historically excluded people in STEM disciplines (e.g., Earth system science) have experienced racism, discrimination, bias, harassment, retaliation, bullying, unequal treatment, and isolation, both in academia and the non-academic workforce. In short, as scholars with different elements, they have not thrived.
Science, as a body of knowledge, is a uniquely qualified source of vetted, objective information that could be brought to bear on many societal issues facing humanity and the Planet. Science, as something that is practiced, is at the mercy of those doing it (conductors). The World is facing “all conductors needed” problems, but due to historical systemic structures, all conductors have not been able to perform. Recent research shows that underrepresented science scholars [conductors] produce higher rates of scientific novelty, yet they do not persist in the systems where the innovation is created (Hofstra et al. 2020). The STEM workforce cannot operate at full capacity if all available and qualified minds are not engaged. The evolution of scientific productivity requires new conductors.
