Evaluation of Nitrate Load Estimations in the Midwestern United States

Abstract:
The aim of this study is the comparison of several commonly estimation methods of nitrate loads in the riverine. We applied the several methods, such as, regression estimator with 5, 6, and 7 parameters, Exploration and Graphics for River Trends (EGRET) method, and a simple linear interpolation (SLI) method to estimate the nitrate loads. The datasets, included the daily discharge and nitrate concentration, were obtained from the National Center for Water Quality Research in the Midwestern United States. This study divided the datasets, which are daily concentration, daily loads, and annual loads, to compare the several methods. We found that the results by combinations of the 7-parameter regression method with the composite residual and rectangular residual adjustments show the better estimates in most cases. In the future, this study can be extended to include other factors, such as the characteristics of rating curves and land-use.
