AgMIP Tools for Food-Energy-Water: Co-Benefits in Regional Farming Systems

Abstract:
Governments, farming communities, and many stakeholders have an interest in knowing how mitigation efforts can provide co-benefits or trade-offs for adaptation at the regional farming systems scale in order to take appropriate action. Synergies include enhancement of soil moisture arising from soil carbon sequestration, inclusion of crop rotations utilizing N fixation and better nutrient recycling from improved manure management practices that reduce GHG emissions. Such potential interactions exist in multiple crop, livestock, and mixed farming systems. Supply-side mitigation interventions include improved grasslands management and rangeland rehabilitation in areas that are degraded, and best practices to maintain farming systems currently well-managed for low or negative net emissions and strong climate resilience. AgMIP and the Global Research Alliance (GRA) are developing a modeling framework for combining types of models in order to determine co-benefits of climate responses for the food-energy-water nexus, including economic benefits.
