Wicked Problems of Water Availability

Abstract:

Using the framework of wicked problems, the presentation discusses how addressing limited water availability requires interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary efforts. Presented water challenges Include surface water availability, groundwater availability, water for basic human needs, water for nature, and water management in a transboundary context. Geographic locales include central Arizona, the Colorado River Basin, and the Middle East. The discussion highlights how hydrologists and other natural scientists, social scientists, and many others must consider the legal-regulatory-policy context and socioeconomic situation as they actively work together to develop pathways to resolving wicked water availability problems.
