Find, Use, and Visualize NASA Earth Science Biodiversity Data

Abstract:

Biologists, ecologists, and wildlife and conservation managers around the globe are conducting research into changes in biodiversity, the impacts of this change, and ways to conserve these vital natural resources. With the information acquired from both ground-based and satellite-based remote sensing data, decision makers are able to monitor and respond to changes in biodiversity.

NASA has numerous datasets and tools that are applicable to monitoring biological diversity. Working in collaboration with NASA’s Applied Sciences program, including the Biological Diversity and Ecological Forecasting and SERVIR projects, NASA’s Research and Analysis program, and several of the NASA Distributed Active Archive Centers, the Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) team has created a series of articles, data toolkits, data pathfinders, and data user profiles on the Earthdata website (earthdata.nasa.gov) to highlight these dataset and tools. These resources are designed to help users of any level of familiarity and expertise more easily find, use, and visualize these datasets to enhance their knowledge and research capabilities.

These resources include a Biological Diversity Toolkit, which provides direct links to those datasets, related webinars on using the data, and data recipes and tutorials. The Biological Diversity and Ecological Forecasting Data Pathfinder, geared for new users, provides direct links to commonly used datasets and links to tools for visualizing and analyzing the data. Feature articles such as Harnessing Remote Sensing Data for Biological and Ecological Research show how NASA data are being used in research applications. Three recent data user profiles highlight the ways these data are being used for research and applications by a diverse community of researchers.
