MAIAC Optical Depth and Absorption Properties of Mineral Dust from EPIC

Abstract:
Located at L1 point 1.5 million km between the Earth and the Sun, the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) provides a high cadence of observations, from 6 to 12 daily per pixel, and a set of channels covering UV-VIS-NIR spectrum. These unique features of EPIC allow us to characterize spectral surface reflectance and extend aerosol characterization beyond optical depth. We will describe MAIAC v2 atmospheric correction algorithm with simultaneous retrievals of AOD and spectral imaginary refractive index providing insight into chemical composition of mineral dust. Retrieval examples and validation against AERONET will be given.
