Successfully Teaching an Online Field Geology Lab Course to Teachers During a Pandemic.

Abstract:

What do you do when your field geology lab course is cancelled due to a pandemic but your students still need a lab course? You create an amazing online learning experience, of course. Learn how we developed an online lab course using drones, cameras, and rock boxes to help teachers understand the amazing geology of the Midwest. This includes Archimedes Principle related to geodes, Cambrian through glacial geology, assessment techniques and more. We will share the process we followed to develop this course, the lab components, video/photography, and how we assessed our students. We will also share feedback from students who were expected to be in the field but found themselves learning virtually. We will discuss how we used zoom meetings, team research, and other successes, along with our failures, as we learned to move a field course online.
