IMPROVING THE GHG EMISSIONS PROFILE OF THE LNG SUPPLY CHAIN

Abstract:
Cheniere's vision statement is to provide clean, secure and affordable energy to the world. We are demonstrating that our commitment to sustainability goes beyond vision statements. We’ve provided dozens of countries access to clean, secure and affordable energy from the United States that is already helping reduce pollution from dependence on oil and coal. In fact, each LNG cargo that leaves our terminals, depending on its destination, could result in a displacement of about 140,000 - 200,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a coal-fired power plant. In 2018 we adopted our first climate and sustainability principles: Science, Operational excellence, Supply chain, and Transparency. Beyond these efforts, engagement with our major gas suppliers is a core pillar of our Climate and Sustainability Principles. As the largest physical domestic consumer of natural gas, we connect U.S. producers to global markets.
Through proactive engagement, data sharing, and a joint commitment to emissions mitigation, we believe we can further improve the carbon intensity of Cheniere-delivered LNG. This can potentially help mitigate future regulatory risks and lead to the development of new business opportunities. In 2019, we began such engagements at our first Supplier Sustainability Workshop. Cheniere is working with its supply chain to model the greenhouse gas footprint of our delivered LNG and to assess our role in reducing the overall emissions footprint, including by exploring steps to reduce fugitive methane emissions throughout the value chain.
