Testing Aerosol Sensitivity in an Extreme Precipitation Event

Abstract:
Solid aerosols are important modulators of the precipitation-generating process. As such, their concentrations may augment the precipitation process in extreme events. This research addresses the question of the sensitivity of solid aerosol concentration related to heavy precipitation events. Results suggest that increased aerosol concentrations are accompanied by shorter-duration and more spatially-confined precipitation. Aerosols can also delay the precipitation process, and as the aerosol concentration increases, the total volumetric precipitation decreases, with an increase in the precipitation in the grid cell with the maximum value. Results may be important in improving forecast models of extreme precipitation events, thereby further protecting life and property.
