FFMT: A MATLAB-based Toolbox for Magnetotellurics (MT)

Abstract:
We present the software package FFMT, which features tools to read, display and process time series data. It provides various options for the interpretation, visualization and preparation of magnetotelluric (MT) data sets. FFMT is an updated version of the research work that has been carried out over a decade at the University of Frankfurt and it is presented as an open source-GUI (graphical user interface) written in MATLAB®.

The software provides a robust multi-site/multi-device processing tool, a wide range of visualization options, and it is compatible with widely used MT modeling and inversion software such as COMSOL Multiphysics®, ModEM or Mare2DEM. Further, it includes a time series generator for the simulation of arbitrary signal and noise patterns, and a 2-D/3-D forward modeling environment for simulating user-defined 3-D (an)isotropic conductivity distributions with arbitrary topography. The tool is ideal for educational and basic-to-high level purposes.

FFMT is suitable for both beginners and advanced scientists, and allows the user to get the most out of an MT data set. Essential and commonly interpretive tools have been included (e.g. the PT, Caldwell et al., 2004), as well as new developments in MT (e.g. the CART, Brown, 2016; Hering et al., 2019). Due to its modular structure, it is possible to integrate new methodologies and to provide the MT community with an always up-to-date toolbox.
