Development of a Suborbital Portal with End-Users and Data Archivers in Mind

Abstract:
NASA’s Earthdata Search is a useful tool for users to locate, access and download Earth observation data. However, incomplete and/or inaccurate metadata inhibits Earthdata Search users from achieving the full benefit of this tool. Furthermore, intricacies associated with non-satellite platforms limit the capability of the tool’s features for discovering & accessing airborne and field investigation datasets. In order to address these issues, the Airborne Data Management Group (ADMG) has partnered with the Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) to create a suborbital field campaign portal leveraging Earthdata Search. This portal is designed to increase the discoverability and access to airborne and field investigation data and to extend data use to broader communities. The portal also aims to encourage data archivers to become more involved in the data management process, thus aiding the tool’s continued success and improving the reuse of their Earth science data holdings. All in all, this presentation will demonstrate the suborbital portal’s features, highlight ADMG’s current response to addressing airborne and field investigation data discovery and access issues, and to briefly discuss the team’s longer-term solutions.
