The JPSS Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) Initiative Program – Providing Critical Support to Current Environmental Challenges and Preparing Users to Meet Future Requirements.

Abstract:

In this presentation, we will provide details on ways that the JPSS Program uses its investments in environmental satellites to benefit not only the NOAA mission but other countries as well. The data, products, and capabilities from the NOAA-20 and Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellites have become critical assets in the global integrated observation systems. The JPSS-2 satellite instruments have been completed and work will soon take place to integrate them on the satellite bus in preparation for its launch in 2022. JPSS-3 and JPSS-4 will maintain the continuity of these critical data sources. The JPSS maintains a robust Satellite Initiative Program that provide forum for the JPSS developers and users to tailor satellite capabilities to operational requirements. Details will be provided on how the satellite initiatives have identified ways for decisionmakers to leverage satellite capabilities for current mission needs and position satellite programs to respond to future science and operational requirements. Specific examples of how satellite data and products have been used to respond to national and international environmental disasters to save lives and property. Finally, information will be provided on the JPSS Program Office Staff’s participation in national and international forums to increase weather, climate, and environmental experts’ understanding of the operational value of the NOAA satellite programs.
