Modeling E and F region metal ion dynamics with SAMI3

Abstract:
Metal ion layers (e.g., Mg+, Fe+) can form in the E region in the altitude range 90 - 150 km and lead to sporadic E events. These metal ion layers can be intense at times and unexpectedly impact the propagation of radio waves. These layers are prevalent in the low- to mid-latitude ionosphere but also occur at times in the polar cap. In this presentation we present results of global metal ion layer dynamics in the E and F region using the SAMI3 ionosphere/plasmasphere model. The emphasis is on the combination of the neutral wind and electric field to dramatically redistribute the metal ions in both altitude and latitude. We demonstrate the dynamic formation of high density E region layers and the `lifting' of metal ions to high altitudes (roughly 600 km), as well as the impact of metallic ions on the onset and evolution of equatorial spread F.
