Abstract:
On a global scale, open biomass burning is one of the largest sources of trace gases and particulate matter in the atmosphere. The western US wildfires impact air quality, visibility, as well as climate on regional scale. Emissions from these fires can have major impacts on the environment and human health. Long range transport of emissions from wildfires degrades air quality and visibility thousands of kilometer downwind of the source. Here we present the data collected during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) 2019 Campaign. Measurements were taken on Aerodyne Mobile laboratory platform equipped with a suite of gaseous and aerosol instrumentation. Emission factors of trace gases like CO, CO2, NOx, CH4 including twelve different VOC’s and particulate matters will be presented. The variations of emission factors based on fuel types and daytime vs nighttime emissions will be explored. In addition, emission factors estimated from the ground based measurements will be compared with the airborne measurement from the NOAA twin-otter to explore the variations in emission factors between ground and airborne measurements.
