First data and instrument performance from Metis coronagraph on Solar Orbiter

Abstract:
Metis on Solar Orbiter is the first coronagraph to achieve simultaneous images in the linearly polarised visible light broadband and in the UV narrowband of the HI Ly-alpha line with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution in a field-of-view from 1.6 to 3.4 degrees, thus covering, as the distance from the Sun varies, a range from 1.7 to 9 solar radii. Aim of the coronagraph is to provide maps of electron and proton densities and of solar wind speed and to follow the evolution of coronal mass ejections in the region connecting the Sun with the heliosphere.

We present here the results of the instrument commissioning, discussing in particular the instrument in-flight performances together with the main calibration activities. We also show some preliminary data of the first perihelion passage at about 0.5 AU in June 2020.
