The impact of the 2020 COVID-19 shelter-in-place order on PM2.5 levels in New York City

Abstract:
We have analyzed ground-based measurements of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in New York, NY, USA for the duration of the statewide shelter-in-place order which took place from March 22 until June 8, 2020. Data from reference monitors operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in each of the five boroughs of the city were analyzed. PM2.5 data for the shelter-in-place period are compared to data from the same time period in 2018. City-wide, PM2.5 levels were lower during the 2020 shutdown period by 37% for the last week of March, 25% for April, and 48% for May. Data from Purple Air low-cost PM sensors across the city were also analyzed for trends and compared with the reference-grade monitor data.
