Improving the CHIRPS (V2.0) precipitation estimates for rainfall extremes using a dense rain gauge network over the Brazilian Amazon

Abstract:
Accurate long-term estimates of rainfall at fine spatial and temporal resolution are vital for climate extreme studies. The Brazilian Amazon has experienced unprecedented drought in the 2010s, but the spatial extent and severity of the droughts have not been well quantified due to data limitations. We assessed the accuracy of three satellite-based precipitation products over a 38-year period: (a) satellite-only The Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation (CHIRP) product, (b) CHIRP with station data (CHIRPS), and (c) CHIRPS blended with data from a dense rain gauge network (DnCHIRPS) – at a monthly scale from 1981 to 2019 in the Brazilian Amazon. We performed monthly, seasonal and annual evaluation using satellite rainfall products and rain gauge observations with a point-to-pixel analysis.
