Abstract:
Global efforts to predict and mitigate the environmental and societal effects of climate change have facilitated the development of new technologies that generate an exponential growth of model and observational climate data. This recent influx of information and resources has highlighted a growing need for reproducible analysis, prompting a shift in focus to the data-centric paradigm in climate research. In this presentation, we demonstrate cutting-edge ideas to facilitate data exploration and scientific data analysis while naturally achieving analysis reproducibility. Earth System Models and observational datasets on and off the cloud, leveraging community-developed, open-source technologies such as Pangeo and intake catalogs will be a vital part of the demonstration, leading to rapid scientific discovery. We will use this paradigm of data exploration and analysis to examine the Earth System response to polar amplification of warming and its associated feedback loops under future climate change scenarios using Earth System Model output published as part of the Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL).
