Archival Radar Echo Sounding Observations of Multi-Decadal Subsurface Changes Along the East Antarctic Coast

Abstract:
The recently digitized Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Technical University of Denmark (TUD) archival radar dataset, known as the SPRI-NSF-TUD surveys, provides new insight on past subglacial conditions in Antarctica. Grounding zones and ice shelves indicate how ice sheets retreats or advances in response to climate change. However, the limited amount of accessible historical radar observations of the subsurface have constrained investigations of how these features evolve over time. The digitized SPRI-NSF-TUD dataset, collected between 1967 and 1979 on 35mm film, contains observations of grounding zones and ice shelves that can be compared with modern radar data to evaluate multidecadal changes in subglacial conditions. We analyzed the SPRI-NSF-TUD data along East Antarctica and compared it with modern radar data. We present results that document thirty years of grounding zone and ice shelf evolution in East Antarctica.
