Schools as a conduit for energy efficiency: An NGSS curriculum for energy education/action at the elementary level

Abstract:
We implemented a light bulb exchange at local elementary schools as a conduit to promote energy and water efficiency and inform families about local utility rebate and efficiency programs. Students engaged in NGSS and common core-aligned energy efficiency lessons at school and then conducted a complete inventory of light bulbs in their home. They calculated which bulbs use the most energy and then brought the biggest energy hogs to school to receive new, energy efficient LED bulbs for free. We partnered with 9 elementary schools that had >80% low income students and provided workshops for teachers over two Saturdays. More than 4,500 students participated with their families. The average family will save 300 kWh/year of energy – achieving ~15% reduction in annual electricity use and reducing their annual energy expenses by more than $50. With a total expected energy savings from the program of $227,000, the program is an extremely cost-effective way to engage young people and their families in actions that reduce their climate impact.
