Abstract:
We report an analysis of low-frequency waves in the Juno magnetic field data that arise from newborn interstellar pickup He+. Neutral He can reach inside 1 AU in significant numbers whereas interstellar neutral H cannot. We do find a significant number of the waves excited by pickup He+ inside the 3 AU boundary where waves due to interstellar H+ are not found. However, we find additional waves due to interstellar He+ beyond 3 AU and all the way to Jupiter. While theory indicates that wave excitation is continuous, the ability to observe the waves reflects the interplay of neutral He ionization by solar EUV vs the changing solar wind turbulence conditions. Our analysis will address this and related questions.
