A Study of Formation of Urban Heat Island(UHI) over Dehradun City,Uttarakhand (India), in the Foothills of Himalaya.
Abstract:
Land surface temperature (LST) reflects the land surface water-heat exchange process which is important to the study of environmental change.The large scale commercial, industrial, transportation activities over the urban areas lead to the emission of large quantity of waste heat in urban atmosphere. All these changes significantly alter the local energy budget, leading to increase temperature over urban areas and creating so called urban heat island (UHI).This study focuses on the formation of Urban Heat Island(UHI) over Dehradun region, Uttarakhand (India) in the foothills of Himalaya.
Landsat-8 OLI/TIRS and LANDSAT 4-5 data were used to calculate the land surface temperature. Ten years of Landsat data (2007-2017) has been used to study the formation of urban heat island. We found a significant correlation between UHI and the impervious surfaces and green space has less correlation along the urban-rural gradients of the Dehradun region. It is recommended that the density and spatial patterns of urban impervious surfaces and green spaces should be considered in urban planning by the urban planners and the policy makers so that urban areas and cities can have healthier and more comfortable living urban environments.
