Abstract:
The geosciences are among the least diverse STEM fields, and the less diverse a field, the greater the reliance on stereotypes and implicit biases, which in turn disproportionately impacts marginalized groups. Research shows that minority groups (gender, race, sexual identity) leave STEM at higher rates than dominant groups, suggesting the prevalence of an exclusionary culture in these fields. Research also shows that people from marginalized groups disproportionately bear the burden of diversity and inclusion work. This is especially relevant to racial and ethnic minorities, who are significantly underrepresented in the geosciences, and face systemic biases and challenges. Progress towards diversification can only come with a concerted shift in mindsets towards a more inclusive STEM culture, with active support of anti-racist efforts and initiatives. This session will provide insights and guidelines on various systemic biases in the geosciences, and what we can do to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
