Abstract:
NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) provides scientific data stewardship including near real-time and delayed-mode product archive and distribution services for the NOAA oceanographic satellite products. The NCEI's Satellite Oceanography Program (SOP) leads the NCEI data stewardship end-to-end process for the satellite-observed sea surface temperature, altimeter sea level height, ocean color, ocean surface wind etc. Based on the archive requirements and features of the dataset, SOP selects NCEI different archive infrastructures consisting of the NOAA Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS), NCEI Archive Management System (AMS), and the Common Ingest system to implement ingest, archival, and distribution of the datasets. In a higher service tier, SOP develops tools to enable automated collection of quality descriptive statistics in a granule in order to monitor the data quality and track the metadata attributes. For some products, SOP also produces quality-improved binned Level-3 gridded data in real-time from the archived Level-2 orbit data , and provides them to the public via user-friendly interfaces. In this presentation, we will introduce the NCEI operational archive and distribution services for the NOAA satellite oceanographic products, as well as SOP’s efforts in data quality monitoring on the datasets.
